In the United States, Miami pharmacist Benjamin Greene prepared a red jelly-like substance in his home oven in the 1940's. He tested the product on his own bald head before supplying it to soldiers during World War II. This formula did not go over too well as it stained fabrics and was not super effective, but Greene kept at it and ended up being the founder of Coppertone.
