Marjoram, with its healthy-giving properties, was a favorite salad herb in the 16th century, and by the 18th century had become one of the most popular sweet herbs used with meats. In stormy weather, marjoram was placed near pails of fresh milk to preserve its sweetness and stop the milk from curdling. Grown in Tudor and Stuart knot gardens, these aromatic herbs attracted bees and butterflies.
