Eye Wash
1 cup boiled tepid water (or distiled bottled water)
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
Dissolve salt in water. With inflammed tissue, such as conjunctivitis, always use cool or tepid water temperatures to encourage a decrease in the swelling. Fill an eye wash cup, or a shot glass, with the salt water solution. Bend over onto the eye cup and fit as snugly as you can over the eye area, trying to prevent any leakage. Tilt head backwards, and blink several times, washing the eyeball and lid with liquid. Tilt head back to the forward and down position and empty eye cup contents into sink. Refill, and wash several times. Pat eye area gently. wash eye cup well with soap and water, as well as your hands. Do not re-use towels, as this can spread to other members of the family, or to the other eye. Follow with compress.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus): This salad-topper also soothes burns; place slices directly on your skin. Cucumber contains at least two compounds that are antidemic, or that reduce swelling -- ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and caffeic acid. These compounds also make cucumbers good for reducing eye swelling (lie down, place a thick slice on each eye, and rest for awhile).

Eye Compress
2 cups boiled water (or distilled bottled water)
1 teaspoon distilled witch hazel (optional)
2 teaspoons of one of the following herbs: Chamomile, Eyebright, or Calendula petals
several 2 inch round cosmetic cotton pads/wipes (or cotton balls)
Heat two cups of water to boil. Then add the herb and let steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Strain through a paper coffee filter or several layers of cheese cloth. Pour into clean glass jar. Add Witch hazel. Close jar and shake well. Refrigerate to cool. When ready to use, shake contents well and pour over cotton pads. Wring out the pads and lie down in a relaxing place. Apply the moist compress to the affected eye for 5 to 10 minutes. Do this tow or three times per day. Remember to keep eyes closed during application! Do not use this application on small children who are unable to follow directions
