Researchers have discovered an ingredient in chocolate that is more effective in stopping persistent coughs when compared to the best cough medicine. The ingredient, theobromine, which is a derivative found in cocoa, is about a third more effective in halting persistent coughs than codeine, which is considered the best cough medicine available today.

Writing in the online FASEB Journal, the researchers said theobromine works by suppressing vagus nerve activity, which is responsible for causing coughing.

For their study, the researchers gave 10 volunteers theobromine, a placebo or codeine. The volunteers were then exposed to capsaicin, which is used by researchers to induce coughing and test the effectiveness of cough medicine. They found theobromine was almost a third more effective in stopping persistent coughs compared to codeine during the trials. The researchers said theobromine is beneficial because it may not have any of the side effects of codeine, such as drowsiness.

"This means there will be no restrictions on when it can be taken," wrote the researchers.
